World AIDS Day is held on 1 December each year. It raises awareness across the world and in the community about the issues surrounding HIV and AIDS. It is a day for people to show their support for people living with HIV and to commemorate people who have died.

As a community and as individuals, there is a lot we can do in relation to HIV. Working in partnership with people with HIV, we can encourage others to understand how HIV is transmitted. We can support people to access testing, treatment and care, as we know that commencing treatment at the early stages of HIV results in better health outcomes and reduces the likelihood of onward transmission.

UNAIDS’s theme for World AIDS Day 2020 is Global Solidarity, Shared Responsibility. UNAIDS is leading the global effort to end AIDS as a public health threat by 2030 as part of the Sustainable Development Goals. The focus of UNAIDS is on stopping new HIV infections, ensuring that everyone living with HIV has access to HIV treatment, protecting and promoting human rights and producing data for decision-making.

Show your support for people with HIV on World AIDS Day by wearing a red ribbon, the international symbol of HIV awareness and support.

International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD) is held on 3 December each year.

IDPwD is a United Nations observed day celebrated internationally. It aims to increase public awareness, understanding and acceptance of people with disability and celebrate their achievements and contributions.

The Australian Government has been supporting IDPwD since 1996 and provides funds to promote and raise awareness of the day around Australia.

Disability inclusion is an essential condition to upholding human rights, sustainable development, and peace and security.

PANSEXUAL - On 8 December each year it is the National Pansexual Pride Day.

The word pansexuality originally comes from Greek. Pan means ‘all’, and is related to words like panorama. Pansexual people aren’t attracted to all other people, but they are attracted to people of all genders. This is different from being attracted to everyone; in the same way that a heterosexual woman will not be attracted to all men and a lesbian woman will not be attracted to all women, pansexual people will experience attraction to specific people and not others.

Pride in Law celebrates the National Pansexual Pride Day. We’d like to acknowledge the strides taken by the pansexual and panromantic community to be accepted and understood. A few important steps on that timeline include:

1914 - The term first appeared as ‘pansexualism,’ and was theorized as sex being “the motivator of all things.”

1970’s - The definition was changed and used to describe a sexual orientation after people began using the term as an identity.

1974 - The New York Times published an article mentioning the term, which launched pansexuality forward and raised awareness.

1990’s – The term ‘sexual fluidity’ was coined and used through the queer community as a way to better understand pansexuality.

2010 - The pansexual flag appeared on the internet in the colors pink, yellow and blue. Its purpose was to represent trans, intersex, agender, bigender, third Gender, nonbinary and fluid orientations.

2018 – Singer/actress Janelle Monae publicly identified as pansexual which led the word to be one of the most searched terms of the year.

Today, many pansexual people refer to themselves as “gender blind” when it comes to their romantic or sexual attraction to others, and is defined as “not limited in sexual choice with regard to biological sex, gender or gender identity.”

The term has become more visible in recent years through pop culture as celebrities such as Miley Cyrus and Amandla Stenberg have identified as pansexual.

Pansexuality has allowed the LGBTIQ+ community and beyond to push how we view gender, sexuality and romanticism and continues to create a more open and accepting space for everyone to explore their own identities – something we can all celebrate.

Today, 10 December, is Human Rights Day . It is the anniversary of the day in 1948 when the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Human Rights Day celebrates all our inalienable rights and freedoms including a right to education, a decent living, health care and a right to live free from any form of discrimination among others.

Adopted on 10th December 1948, the Declaration stipulates universal values and a shared standard of achievement for everyone in every country. While the Declaration is not a binding document, it inspired over 60 human rights instruments that today make a common standard of human rights. It is the most translated document around the globe available in over 500 languages.

The aim of the Declaration of Human Rights is to establish a common standard of living for all people across the planet that everyone is entitled to, and to in turn encourage all UN member states to strive towards the said standard of living for the people in their nation.

Pride in Law joins the world in celebrating this important day.
